As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 410 people, 169 households, and 113 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,103.0 people per square mile (427.8/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 602.6 per square mile (233.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.61% White, 0.24% Native American, 3.66% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.63% of the population.

There were 169 households out of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.1% were non-families. 30.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.10.

In the town the population was spread out with 30.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 17.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $25,893, and the median income for a family was $35,417. Males had a median income of $24,286 versus $18,125 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,662. About 14.0% of families and 17.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.3% of those under age 18 and 14.5% of those age 65 or over.

Economy

The town's location in the Hugoton Fredrich Basin makes it an ideal source for helium production from natural gas. 169,000 million cubic feet (4.8×109 m3) of liquid helium is produced annually by the Keyes Helium Company.
